Maryland State Police Museum

The Maryland State Police Museum is located on the grounds of state police headquarters in Pikesville, Maryland. Its goal will be to tell the story, and preserve the history of, the Maryland State Police from its founding on Jan. 10, 1921 to the present day.

The museum includes artifacts, documents, photos and more to educate the public about the mission of the Maryland State Police, along with highlighting the growth and the accomplishments of the department over the past century. This includes:

Historic Firsts
Tributes to Fallen Heroes
The growth of specialized units including: Aviation, Forensic Sciences, K-9, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, Automotive Safety Enforcement Division, Underwater Recovery Team and the S.T.A.T.E. Team
Trailblazing Troopers
Understanding of the department's history
Contributions of barracks from Western Maryland to the Eastern Shore

Below are just some of the photos that could be on display at the Maryland State Police Museum. The museum is also looking for photo donations from the public to help tell the story of the department. Photos can even be uploaded through your smartphone.

On Jan. 10, 1921, the Maryland State Police became a reality as 36 recruits began training in the first academy class. One month later, Gov. Albert Ritchie presided over the graduation of the first members of the Maryland State Police.

Captain Milton Taylor has the distinction of being the first African-American trooper in the department. He graduated from the academy in 1957 and served in the department for 25 years before retiring in 1982.

History was made in 1974 when the first six female troopers joined the ranks of the Maryland State Police.

Motorcycles were an integral part of the early portion of MSP's history. the department soon transitioned to mostly cars as departmental vehicles before bringing back the motorcycle unit in the 1980s.

Over the past 100 years, the Maryland State Police has continued to evolve as its mission has expanded. Today's department includes many specialized units designed to serve and protect the citizens of the state.

The trooper standing here was the one who actually posed for the recruiting poster in the exhibit.

"East to West: A Home Away From Home" highlights the history and contributions of the Cumberland and Berlin Barracks. Pictured here is the Berlin portion of the exhibit.
