​While on a traffic stop late in the evening, Trooper Presbury was shot four times with a .45 caliber weapon by a suspect. He died several days later without regaining consciousness. The incident occurred on the northbound shoulder of Maryland State Route 3 (Crain Highway), 1/3 mile south of Md. Rt. 176 (Dorsey Road).​
