The Maryland Department of State Police is a full-service law enforcement agency whose sworn and civilian employees are committed to providing the highest quality police services. Our mission is to be a statewide force for a safer Maryland, and our Troopers and civilian support staff are dedicated to fulfilling that mission while upholding our core values of integrity, fairness, and service.
The Maryland State Police was organized in 1921 and charged with reducing crime and highway tragedies through statewide patrol and relentless enforcement of criminal and traffic laws. This directive has not changed and remains the focus of what we do each day. We are proud of our tradition of excellence in serving and protecting the people of Maryland.
Our Department fulfills an important role in law enforcement. As a State Police force, we work to coordinate efforts between local and federal law enforcement. Our statewide initiatives reduce traffic crashes, drunk driving, aggressive driving, unsafe vehicles, and other threats to highway safety. Concurrently, our criminal enforcement emphasis is on cross-border and inter-jurisdictional crime that involves illegal drug importation and distribution, apprehending fugitives, and reducing violent crime.
An important part of our mission is to support local law enforcement. Maryland State Police assistance includes investigative services, mobile field force support, and specialized services such as computer crime investigation and fugitive tracking. Our Aviation Command provides statewide medevac and aerial law enforcement assistance, and more than 70 percent of the evidence analyzed by our Forensic Sciences Division is completed for local law enforcement agencies.
Whether you live here, are visiting, or are just traveling through our state, you can be assured the members of the Maryland State Police are on the job protecting, preventing, and providing. They are committed to protecting you and your family, preventing criminal acts and traffic crashes, and providing outstanding law enforcement services.
On behalf of the sworn and civilian employees of the Maryland State Police, thank you for visiting the Maryland State Police website and for your interest in our Department. Regardless of the service you need from the Maryland State Police, we stand ready to assist you as we work together to keep our state safe.
