OSFM Fire Protection Engineer Intern

The main purpose of the OSFM Fire Protection Engineer Intern position will be to work with the OSFM Engineering Workgroup to assist with the statewide implementation of a new computer-aided dispatch, records management system, equipment, and other engineering software designed to enhance the Engineering Section’s ability to provide code interpretation, consultation, and fire protection engineering assistance to architects, engineers, and other design professionals throughout the State during design and pre-construction phases. 


Position Duties


The intern will be supervised by OSFM Special Projects and receive guidance and direction from members of the OSFM Engineering Section. Duties include, but not limited to:



  1. Documenting workflow

  2. Reviewing, drafting, and editing Engineering Section policy and standard operating procedures

  3. Help define existing work assigned to Section

  4. Support the Engineering Section by assisting experienced engineers in documenting the current processes used to analyze building designs, identify fire hazards, and design fire protection systems like sprinklers and alarms

  5. Review existing laws and regulations for potential modifications in support of the automated workflow

  6. Evaluate and document digital plan submission processes

  7. Research and evaluate the use of AI to assist with plan review

  8. Help design a statewide pilot program


Minimum Qualifications

Education: Enrollment or recent graduate from an accredited college or university.


Preferred Qualifications: Preferred candidates should be currently enrolled full-time in a bachelor's or graduate program in fire protection 

engineering at a Maryland college or university. A related engineering field may be considered. 


Competent in any of the following areas: mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering fundamentals, computer programming languages, 

CAD software, and data analysis tools.  Experience with process mapping and business process modeling will be helpful. Other preferred 

skills include critical thinking, problem-solving, communication (written and visual), teamwork, adaptability, and leadership skills are preferred. 


Selection Process:

Only candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be considered for this internship. Candidates should submit a detailed resume that 

provides complete and accurate information. Resumes must include three references, at least one of which must be a professor or instructor from

 their degree program. 


The application period will close on Friday, April 18th, 2025, at 4 p.m.

Qualified candidates will be interviewed and rated based on their qualifications and interview results. A selection will be made based on the scoring of the resume, qualifications, and interview.


Compensation:


This intern position is expected to work twenty (20) hours per week, which will be compensated $1,000 monthly. The duration of this internship will be up to twelve months from the start date. This is a hybrid position, interns are expected to have their own transportation.


Note that his internship is provided and funded through a partnership with the Maryland State Firefighters Association. As this is an intern position only, neither the MSFA nor the OSFM are responsible for withholding taxes.

The main purpose of the OSFM Fire Prevention Intern position will be to work with the OSFM Community Risk Reduction Unit to assist with the statewide implementation of the OSFM Community Risk Reduction Strategic Plan and fire prevention activities.


Position Duties

The intern will be supervised by the OSFM Public Education and Risk Reduction Officer. Duties include, but not limited to:


  1. Documenting workflow

  2. Supporting the goals of the OSFM Community Risk Reduction Strategic Plan

  3. Reviewing, drafting, and editing Public Education and Risk Reduction policy and standard operating procedures

  4. Assist in the preparation of materials related to the OSFM Community Risk Reduction Strategic Plan and any related grants.

  5. Assist with data analytics and GIS page building

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Enrollment in a Maryland-accredited college or university.


Preferred Qualifications: Preferred candidates should be currently enrolled full-time in an associate's, bachelor's, or graduate program in fire science or public safety administration at a Maryland college or university. Candidates would have a basic knowledge of fire prevention, safety procedures, and relevant guidelines. 


Competent in any of the following areas: strong communication skills (both verbal and written), instructional skills, public speaking, critical thinking, record keeping, computer proficiency, data analytics and GIS systems.
