On April 23, 1955 at 11:00 p.m.Charles Moates, a Magistrate at the time, was shot in the chest at close range as he stood in his workshop located at his residence on Dayton Avenue in Frederick County, MD. Investigation identified two suspects in the crime, one of which confessed and later recanted. The case was never brought to trial for lack of evidence.
