​While parked in the median of Interstate 95 exchanging information with Trooper Larry E. Small, both Trooper First Class Sawa and Trooper Small were struck and killed by a tractor-trailer which ran off the road. The incident occurred on I-95 northbound, at the Havre de Grace interchange.​
