Death Investigation Underway In Harford County

(EDGEWOOD, MD) The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is conducting a death investigation in Harford County. 

The deceased is identified as Charles Glenroy Smellie, Jr., 41, of Forestville. Smellie was the driver and sole occupant of a 2026 white BWM 330i.  He was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy.

At approximately 8:00 a.m., members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force notified Maryland State Police of a pursuit involving a homicide suspect on I-95 in Baltimore County.  The pursuit traveled on Maryland Route 152 into Harford County and ended near the gate at Aberdeen Proving Ground. 

When troopers arrived, the pursuit had ended.  Emergency medical service personnel were on scene and pronounced the driver deceased. 

The preliminary investigation indicates the driver suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  No shots were fired by law enforcement.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit responded to lead the investigation. Information gleaned during the on-scene investigation indicates the deceased was a suspect involved in a homicide investigation in Prince George’s County. 

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit leads the death investigation. Media is asked to contact the Prince George’s County Police Department for the homicide investigation.  

Maryland State Police from the Bel Air Barrack responded to the scene. Crime Scene Technicians from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division processed the scene for evidence. Maryland State Police Aviation Command also responded to assist. Troopers from the Criminal Enforcement Division Northern Region responded to assist along with the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, deputies from Harford County Sheriff’s Office and personnel from the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division. 

The investigation continues.
