State Police Investigating Pedestrian-Involved Crash in Anne Arundel County Work Zone

News |

(MILLERSVILLE, MD) – Maryland State Police are investigating an early morning crash in Anne Arundel County that injured a highway worker in an active work zone.

At approximately 12:45 a.m., troopers from the Maryland State Police Glen Burnie Barrack responded to northbound I-97 near Route 32 for a report of a pedestrian-involved crash. The preliminary investigation indicates that a Toyota Camry, operated by Javed Iqbal, 47, of Baltimore, and a Mercedes Model S, operated by Darrell Lamont Gough, 62, of Elkridge, were traveling northbound on I-97 approaching an active work zone.

Police believe the driver of the Toyota began to slow down for a lane closure when, for unknown reasons, the Mercedes struck the Toyota in the rear. The Mercedes then veered into the work zone and struck a highway worker and a portable light tower.

The highway worker, a 31-year-old man, was transported by ground to a local trauma center for treatment. No other injuries were reported on the scene.

An on-duty Maryland State Trooper was stationary in his marked patrol car with emergency lights activated at the time of the crash.

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined. Investigators believe impairment may have been a contributing circumstance. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the active and ongoing investigation.  Upon completion, the investigation will be presented to the Office of the State’s Attorney in Anne Arundel County.

Anne Arundel County emergency medical services personnel responded to the scene along with troopers from the Glen Burnie and Annapolis Barracks. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration assisted with lane closures, which lasted approximately three hours.
